Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has instructed relevant officials to expedite the cleaning of canals and drainage systems in Colombo District to ensure the efficient drainage of rainwater, in view of the anticipated increase in rainfall during the coming period.

She further directed that these cleaning activities be completed within the next two weeks and that regular maintenance be carried out continuously thereafter.

The Prime Minister made these remarks today (13) while attending the Colombo District Coordinating Committee meeting held at the Narahenpita District Secretariat.

In this instance, the Divisional Secretariats, the Department of Agrarian Development, and the Provincial Irrigation Department presented the issues encountered during the cleaning of drainage and canal systems, while officials also outlined the challenges faced regarding the shortage of technical officers and during the preparation of plans and estimates.

During the meeting, the Colombo District Coordinating Committee also reviewed the development programmes scheduled for implementation in the district in 2026.

In this regard, officials provided updates and clarifications on projects planned across several key sectors, including rural road development, community empowerment, disaster management, and the promotion of a sports culture.
