Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a ruling that former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and several others are in contempt of court for failing to comply with a Supreme Court order.
On March 27, the Supreme Court delivered a judgment ordering former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella to pay Rs. 75 million to the state, while former Secretary to the Ministry of Health Janaka Chandragupta, National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) Chairman Prof. S.D. Jayaratne, and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Vijith Gunasekara were each ordered to pay Rs. 50 million for violating fundamental rights in connection with irregularities in the procurement of medicines.
The petition alleges that the respondents have committed contempt of court by failing to comply with the court's judgment.
Accordingly, TISL has requested the Supreme Court to take appropriate legal action against the respondents who have failed to comply with the order, under the Contempt of a Court, Tribunal or Institution Act, No. 8 of 2024, and Article 105(3) of the Constitution.
