Former Bangladesh one-day cricket captain Tamim Iqbal experienced a heart attack during a domestic cricket match on Monday and was rushed to the hospital.
The 36-year-old was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club in a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 50-over match when the incident occurred.
Although Tamim participated in the pre-match toss, he later reported chest pain and received initial treatment on the field before being transported to a hospital.
“He suffered a heart attack. What I know so far is that his heart started to function better,” said Debashis Chowdhury, a medical officer of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
“Being treated at a hospital in Savar on Dhaka’s outskirts and urged the Bangladeshi public to pray for his quick recovery,” said Tariqul Islam, a team official.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board cancelled its scheduled board meeting, with several board members visiting Tamim at the hospital.
Tamim played 391 matches for Bangladesh across all formats from 2007 to 2023.
He has accumulated over 15,000 international runs and remains the only Bangladeshi batsman to achieve centuries in all three international cricket formats.
