Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in attendance at the 2023 ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad on Sunday (Nov.19), paid a visit to the Indian dressing room at the Narendra Modi Stadium following the team’s grueling defeat to Australia.
On Monday (Nov.20), all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and seamer Mohammed Shami, who was the leading wicket taker of the tournament, took to social media to share photos alongside PM Modi from his visit after the match.
“Unfortunately yesterday was not our day. I would like to thank all Indians for supporting our team and me throughout the tournament. Thankful to PM Narendra Modi for specially coming to the dressing room and raising our spirits. We will bounce back!” wrote Shami, who nabbed 24 wickets from just seven outings and also became India’s top wicket taker in ODI World Cup history during the process.
“We had a great tournament but we ended up short yesterday. We are all heartbroken but the support of our people is keeping us going. PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the dressing room yesterday was special and very motivating,” shared Jadeja.
PM Modi, alongside Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, also handed over the World Cup trophy to the Australian skipper Pat Cummins in the post-final ceremony.
It was the sixth ODI World Cup win for Australia and a second for Pat Cummins, who was also a part of the squad that won it back in 2015 playing at home.
