The Colombo High Court today (May 4) ordered the Prisons Commissioner General to move Sarath Fonseka to the National Hospital from Nawaloka hospital where he is currently receiving treatment for an illness related to his lungs.
Assistant Commissioner of Prisons, Ashoka Hapuarachchi, told the Colombo High Court earlier today that it was difficult to provide security for former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka while he is receiving treatment the Nawaloka Hospital but would be able to do so if he was moved to the Colombo National Hospital.
The Assistant Commissioner pointed out that it was difficult to provide security at a private hospital.
The attorneys representing Fonseka stated that the request was preposterous as the doctor treating Fonseka, Vajira Tennakoon did not practice at the National Hospital and did so at Nawaloka.
However, the court overruled the objection and stated that Fonseka can seek the approval of the Health Ministry Secretary and get the necessary attention from Dr. Tennakoon at the National Hospital.
The Colombo High Court earlier ordered prison authorities to provide security to Sarath Fonseka after permitting him to receive treatment at the Nawaloka Hospital.
The court gave permission to admit the former Army Commander to the Nawaloka hospital on April 25.
