Thirty-seven individuals were hospitalized due to food poisoning after consuming food at the opening ceremony of the renovated 18-bend (18 Wanguwa) stretch on the Kandy- Mahiyangana road yesterday.

They were admitted to Ududumbara District Hospital and Meda Mahanuwara Hospital with symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain, Central Province Health Services Director, Dr. Shanthi Samarasinghe said, however adding that most of them have been discharged by now.

The Public Health Inspector (PHI) of the Ududumbara Medical Officer of Health Office has been sent to the location where the food was prepared in order to conduct investigations.

Necessary legal action will be taken after his report is received, Dr. Samarasinghe told Ada Derana.

She said they assume the eggs contained in the rice packets distributed may have caused an allergic reaction.

The renovated famous 18-bend road was declared open by Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (May 06) at a ceremony held in Ududumbara. (AdaDerana)
