The Deputy Mayor of Moratuwa Municipal Council, Sujith Pushpakumara has been arrested in connection with the killing of a monk, police said.

The Deputy Mayor was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division this evening for questioning.

The Chief Buddhist monk of the Sunandopanandaramaya Temple in Egoda Uyana, Moratuwa, was stabbed to death last night over a land dispute.

The two main suspects of the murder were found shot dead in Bandaragama area this morning.

It is reported that there had been a long standing dispute between the monk and two men who were illegally living on the Temple land.

The monk who had already filed a case against the two men had yesterday again lodged a complaint at the police station regarding the dispute.
