As a result of search operations launched from yesterday after two teenagers – a boy and a girl - allegedly jumped into the Deduru Oya Reservoir, authorities today recovered the body of the 15-year-old boy.

The body was recovered by navy divers this morning while the search for the missing girl is still continuing, the police media unit said.

Police, navy and concerned villagers yesterday joined a wide search operation following information received that the students jumped into the reservoir in what is suspected to be a suicide attempt.

The school bags of the two teenagers, who are believed to be lovers, were found near the bank of the reservoir last evening while the boy’s school shirt was also discovered nearby.

According to the books found inside the bags, the teenagers have been identified as Grade 11 students from different schools in Kuliyapitiya while police took steps to notify their parents through the schools’ principals.

Meanwhile in a separate incident two students have drowned in the sea off Nilwella, Dickwella.

The two 17-year-old youths were sea bathing when they were swept away by strong waves, police said.

Residents in the area had managed to rescue the boys and admitted them to the Dickwella Hospital, however they were pronounced dead shortly after.

The victims are residents of Godellahenawatta and Ingurutuduwa.
