The Chief Minister of the Western Province Prasanna Ranatunga has been summoned to appear before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on July 14, in connection with a case filed against him, police said.

Ranatunga has been accused of obtaining a sum of Rs 5 million to fill and develop a land in the Wellampitiya area as well as to remove the unauthorized occupants of the property.

The businessman, who claims to have made the payment to Ranatunga, has lodged a complaint with the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) alleging that the sum has been deposited into a bank account belonging to the Chief Minister’s wife.

Ranatunga had been notified to appear at the FCID yesterday (9) to give a statement on the matter, however he had failed to do so and instead informed the IGP through the Elections Commissioner in writing requesting another date due to election activities.

The order was issued for him to appear before the court following details reported to the court by the FCID.

The Financial Crimes Investigation Division had previously questioned the Chief Minister’s wife for nearly 6 hours regarding the complaint.
