FR petition filed challenging UFPA National List

A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition has been filed today by a member of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) challenging the UFPA National List, which includes several candidates who were defeated at the general election.

The FR petition has been filed with the Supreme Court by MEP member Somaweera Chandrasiri, challenging the decision to name losing candidates in the UPFA National List.

The MEP, led by former Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, is a constituent party of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), which had managed to secure 12 bonus seats despite losing the parliamentary polls.

The National List was announced last Friday (21) and includes 7 UPFA candidates who contested and lost at the General Election on August 17 while they were also not named in the party’s National List announced before polls.
