Girl injured in Piliyandala shooting dies

The eleven-year-old girl who was injured during the shooting incident on May 9 in Piliyandala has succumbed to injuries at hospital, bringing the death toll from the incident to two.

The girl died this morning while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the Colombo National Hospital, the Director of the hospital said. 

A police Constable was killed and five others including two children were injured when gunmen opened fire at a team of officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau, on their way to a drug raid in a car. 

The 11-year-old girl, who was at the location when the suspects had opened fire, was critically injured and hospitalized on May 09. 

Police Constable Chaminda Abeywickreme was killed in the shooting while Police Inspector M. Neomal Rangajeewa and another constable were injured.

The IGP has appointed senior DIG M.R. Latiff to investigate the incident.
