UPDATE: (1.10pm) - Former Parliamentarian Anuruddha Polgampola, who was arrested by the CID, has been remanded until May 18 after being produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

Former Kegalle District MP Anuruddha Polgampola has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for alleged fraud of Rs 8 million.

He was reportedly taken into custody yesterday (15) based on a warrant issued for failure to present himself for a case filed over financial fraud.

Polgampola was recently appointed as the Chairman of the State Timber Corporation (STC) by the President only for the decision to be suspended a few days later due to concerns raised over his appointment.

Former UPFA MP Shantha Bandara was later appointed to the position, which was left vacant since a bribery scandal led to the arrest of then STC chairman P. Dissanayake on May 3.

A former Organizing Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Polgampola joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in January this year expressing support to President Maithripala Sirisena.
