Gnanasara thero released on bail

General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) organisation Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara thero has been released on bail by the Homagama Magistrate’s Court.

He was produced before Homagama Magistrate Ranga Dasanayake and released on a personal bail of Rs 200,000.  

Three cases including the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda, Gnanasara thero’s contempt of court and the threatening of Sandhya Eknaligoda was taken up in court today. 

The Habeas Corpus case in connection with the disappearance of Eknaligoda was postponed till March 08 and the suspects further remanded until then.

 The case against Gnanasara thero on contempt charges was postponed till May 24 by the magistrate who asked the Attorney General to file any indictments if needed. 

Gnanasara thero was also ordered to refrain from intimidating any of the witnesses in the aforementioned cases. 

A warrant had been issued for the arrest of Gnanasara Thero on charges of contempt of court and allegedly threatening Sandhya Eknaligoda, the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda at the court premises.

Sandhya Eknaligoda had arrived at the premises for the hearing into the Habeas Corpus case in connection with the disappearance of her husband.

The thero surrendered to court on January 26 and has been in remand custody. He was ordered released on bail in connection with the contempt case on February 09.
