Constitutional Council approved President’s nomination for CJ

The Constitutional Council has approved President Maithripala Sirisena’s nomination for the position of Chief Justice.
The Constitutional Council chaired by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya convened at the Parliamentary Complex at 12 noon today (12).
The vacant position of Chief Justice was discussed during the meeting while the council approved the President’s nomination to the position, the Speaker’s Office said.
Accordingly, the Council’s decision has been notified to the President, it said.
President Sirisena has reportedly nomination Supreme Court Judge Nalin Perera to the post of Chief Justice, which will fall vacant today due to the retirement of incumbent Chief Justice Priyasad Dep.
H. Nalin Jayalath Perera is a sitting Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. He is a former High court and Court of Appeal judge.
He was appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena in 2016 to replace Justice Sarath de Abrew in the Supreme Court.
He will become the 46th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka and the first career Judge to be appointed as Chief Justice after three decades.
