UPFA wins in Western Province

The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has once again secured a victory in the election for the Western Provincial Council with a majority of 683,953 over the United National Party in the 2014 PC polls, despite losing 12 seats in the process.
The UPFA received a total of 1,363,635 votes, more than double the number of votes the UNP received in the Western Province. The main opposition party, which managed to batter the ruling party in just five polling division in the entire province, obtained 679,682 votes.
Sarath Fonseka’s Democratic Party (DP), which contested the Western Provincial Council polls for the first time received 203,767 votes in total to claim the third spot from the People’s Liberation Front (JVP), which amassed 156,260 votes.
The Democratic People’s Front, led by Mano Ganesan, received 51,000 votes while the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) obtained 49,515. The All Ceylon Makkal Congress received 15,491 votes and the Political Wing of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) managed 8,216 votes.
The result gives the UPFA a total of 56 seats (including 2 bonus seats) in the Western Provincial Council while the UNP is left with 28 seats.
The DP secured 9 seats in the significant provincial council, 3 more than the JVP. The DPF and SLMC secured 2 seats each while the ACMC gets 1 seat.
However, the result sees the ruling party which had secured 68 total seats in the 2009 PC election lose 12 crucial seats which have been taken over by the DP and JVP, which only secured 3 seats in the last election.
The UNP has also lost 2 seats from the previous provincial poll while the SLMC has retained its 2 seats.
