The roadway from Colombo to Hambantota of the landslide-hit stretch of Southern Expressway will be reopened for traffic from 6.00 p.m. today (Oct. 13), the Road Development Authority (RDA) says.

Accordingly, two lanes will facilitate vehicular movement for both ways, the RDA Director General explained.

But the other two lanes stretching from Hambantota to Colombo will remain closed until further notice.

On Wednesday night (Oct. 11), an earth slip was reported near the 102km Post between Pinnaduwa and Imaduwa interchanges as a result of the downpours that hammered the area yesterday. Accordingly, traffic on both sides of the expressway remained blocked ever since.

RDA authorities had been working in tandem with Sri Lanka Army personnel to clear the blocked stretch of road.

Meanwhile, six Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel and a Police Constable, who were on duty at the expressway, were reportedly hospitalized after sustaining injuries due to the said earth slip.
