SriLankan Airlines flight makes emergency landing in Jakarta

A SriLankan Airlines flight operating from Melbourne to Colombo declared an emergency and diverted earlier today due to a medical problem on board.

 

SriLankan Airlines flight UL605, an Airbus A330-300 operating from Melbourne Airport (MEL) was en route to Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB).

 

The flight was at cruising level to the south of Indonesia when flight crew declared a general emergency with transponder code 7700.

 

Flight crew then elected to divert north from their position to Jakarta Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK).

 

The flight subsequently landed at the diversion airport in Jakarta at 20:56 local time.

 

Flight Details

 

Flight data shows that Sri Lankan flight UL605 made a delayed departure out of Melbourne Airport (MEL) at 17:16 local time today. Scheduled departure time for the service was listed as 1635 local time.

 

The flight then set course normally, climbing to flight level FL380 (38,000 feet) for the trans-Indian Ocean service to Colombo.

 

The emergency was then declared from the cruise passing en route to the south of Java, Indonesia and a diversion was expedited to Jakarta.

 

Aircraft Details

 

The aircraft conducting the UL605 service to Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) was an Airbus A330-300, registered 4R-ALQ.

 

This is an 8.6-year-old wide-body aircraft belonging to the national carrier SriLankan Airlines. It has been in active service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in December 2015.

 

SriLankan Airlines is the national carrier of Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1979 as Air Lanka and was renamed SriLankan Airlines in 1998.

 

The national carrier flies to over 100 destinations in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.

 

The airline’s main hub is Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka. SriLankan Airlines offers a variety of cabin classes, including Economy, Business, and First Class. The airline also has a frequent flyer program called FlySmiLes.
