A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed regarding the alleged harassment of the public during the ‘Gota Go Gama’ protests in the Galle Face Green, where spiked barricades were placed on the roads around the Presidential Palace, has been fixed for hearing by the Supreme Court.
The petition, filed by Attorney-at-Law Senaka Perera, claims that the fundamental human rights of the public were violated through this act, since these roadblocks posed a danger to the people.
The relevant petition was taken up by a three-member Supreme Court judge bench consisting of Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Yasantha Kodagoda, and Priyantha Fernando.
After reviewing the case, the court ordered that notice be issued to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General, who have been named as respondents in the petition, to appear before the court on March 04, 2025.
The petitioner argues that the spiked barricades placed by the police during the protests posed significant risks to the public and has requested the Supreme Court to declare that the public’s fundamental rights were violated through this act.
Additionally, the petition seeks a compensation of Rs. 50 million for the affected individuals.
