One dead, 2 injured in shooting at Midigama

One person is reported dead while two others have been injured in a shooting incident at Midigama in Matara.

Police said the two unidentified gunmen, who arrived on a motorcycle, had opened fire at a person who was at a fish market in the Goviyapana area in the Midigama police area this morning (19) and had fled the scene.

The owner of the fish stall, who sustained serious injuries from the gunfire, along with two other individuals who had arrived at the stall and were also injured from the shooting were admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital for treatment.

However, the fish market owner had succumbed to his injuries upon admission to the hospital.

The deceased is a 38-year-old resident of the Goviyapana area.

The body has been placed at the mortuary of the Karapitiya Hospital.

The preliminary investigations indicate that the murder was carried out on the directive of an organized criminal figure who is operating from abroad.

Midigama Police is conducting further investigations to arrest the suspects.

Meanwhile, another shooting had taken place at around 10.00 p.m. last night (18) inside a shop at Saranankara Road in Kohuwala police area.

The shop owner, a 43-year-old resident of Nedimala in Dehiwala, had succumbed to injuries after being admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital following the shooting.

The shooting was reportedly carried out by two unidentified gunmen who had arrived on a motorcycle.
