The United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Marc-André Franche met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Thursday (03) at the Presidential Secretariat.

During the meeting, the UN Resident Coordinator conveyed the warm greetings of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to President Dissanayake, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

Mr. Marc-André Franche praised the President’s manifesto and commended the President’s ethical nature of the political campaign, it said.

The Resident Coordinator acknowledged that the coming period will be challenging as public expectations are high, but assured the UN’s support for Sri Lanka’s IMF programme and the government’s poverty eradication efforts.

He also lauded the anti-corruption initiative outlined in the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s manifesto, noting that it offers hope for a new beginning. He assured technical and financial support from the UN to aid in these efforts, the PMD reported.

Furthermore, the unique initiative for national peace among communities was highly praised, with the UN acknowledging the President’s dedication to fostering trust among diverse groups. The UN pledged its full backing for this initiative to promote lasting peace in the country, the statement added.
