The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has decided to nominate Namal Rajapaksa as an MP through the party’s National List, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said.

Kariyawasam announced this while joining a press briefing held this morning (16).

The SLPP managed to secure only 3 seats including one bonus seat (national list) in the Parliament through the results of the 2024 General Election, which was held on November 14.

The number of total votes obtained by the SLPP, once the largest party in Parliament from 2020 to 2024, was only 350,429 (3.14%) in this year’s parliamentary poll.

Meanwhile, Namal Rajapaksa, who also contested in the 2024 Presidential Election which was held two months ago, had managed to obtain only 342,781 votes from across the country, which was 2.57% of the total votes.

In the meantime, Chanaka Sampath, who obtained 8,447 preferential votes in the Galle District and  former State Minister D.V. Chanaka who secured  16,546 preferential votes in the Hambantota District are the only SLPP parliamentary candidates who have secured seats in the 10th Parliament.
