Indictments filed against biomedical engineer attached to Health Ministry

Indictments have been filed before the Colombo High Court today (17) against a biomedical engineer attached to the Division of Biomedical Engineering Services at the Ministry of Health, alleging that he caused financial losses to the government through the purchase of 35 operating room lamps in 2015.

 

Accordingly, the indictments filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) were handed over before the Colombo High Court Judge Nawarathne Marasinghe today.

 

Subsequently, the court ordered the defendant to be released on two surety bails of Rs. 2.5 million each and a cash bail of Rs. 25,000. 

 

Furthermore, the court imposed an overseas travel ban against him until the hearing of the case is conclude, and ordered him to hand over his passport to the court.

 

In addition, another bail condition was imposed on the defendant which requires him to report to the Bribery Commission on the last Sunday of every month. 

 

Subsequently, the High Court Judge also ordered the pre-trial conference of the case to be called on January 30, 2025.

 

The Bribery Commission has filed indictments against the accused under the Bribery Act before the Colombo High Court, alleging that he has committed the offence of “corruption” by causing a financial loss to the government by approving the purchase of 35 operating room lamps by a company while serving as a biomedical engineer in the Division of Biomedical Engineering Services at the Ministry of Health, between April 07, 2015 and July 15, 2016.

 

Accordingly, 32 persons have been named as witnesses in the case and 16 documents have been presented as evidence to the court.
