50 arrested in Jaffna?

Approximately 50 persons including university students have been arrested and are currently being questioned at the Jaffna police station, Jaffna police told Ada Derana. Speaking to Ada Derana Rajarata University Student Council Vice President N.H.P.D. Navarathne said that while they were conducting the ‘reveal names’ campaign police came and took them away.

 

According to Navarathne the ‘reveal names’ campaign was launches as a petition demanding the authorities to reveal the names of those arrested during to war and are being kept under custody. He claimed that a similar campaign took place in Colombo and this was their attempt to take it to Jaffna.

 

Navarathne added that while they were collecting signatures from civilians in Jaffna, police came and took them away without giving a reason. He stated that there were 10 female university student among the arrested.

 

When contacted Police media spokesman Prishanth Jayakodi said that he was not aware of such an incident.

 

However Jaffna police confirmed that there were a group of approximately 50 persons arrested and are now being questioned.
