India defeated Sri Lanka by 60 runs on Thursday, which meant that they went into the Super Sixes of the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup unbeaten.
Niki Prasad’s troops defeated West Indies to start their campaign before taking down Malaysia by 10 wickets, after which they hammered Sri Lanka.
With their third win on the trot, India also finished Group A on top of the table with six points and a net run rate of +5.035.
After being asked to bat first, India put up a decent score of 118 for the loss of nine wickets. Gongadi Trisha, who found her form against Malaysia, was their standout batter, although she missed out on scoring a half-century.
India did not have the best of starts as G Kamalini and Sanika Chalke departed cheaply after Pramudi Methsara bowled a double wicket-maiden in the fourth over.
Rain interrupted play thereafter, but no overs were lost. Skipper Niki Prasad scored 11 runs before Aseni Thalagune accounted for her wicket.
Trisha scored 49 runs off 44 balls with five fours and a six, and looked good. But Manudi Nayanakkara dismissed her against the run of play.
After Trisha perished, Mithila Vinod injected momentum with a quick-fire 16-run knock off 10 balls. Later in the innings, VJ Joshitha smashed Rashmika Sewwandi for a six followed by a four to take India close to the 120-run mark.
Methsara, Limansa Thilakarathna and Thalagune picked up two wickets apiece.
India race to comprehensive win
Sri Lanka made a horrendous start to their run-chase as India reduced them to 26 for five in the powerplay. In fact, the Islanders once found themselves at 12 for five in 4.2 overs.
While Shabnam Shakil got the wickets of Sumundu Nisansala and Dahami Sanethma, Joshitha removed Sanjana Kavindi and Hiruni Hansika.
Skipper Manudi Nayanakkara was run out after a horrible mix-up with Rashmika Sewwandi. Rashmika looked dangerous in her 15-run knock off 12 balls before left-arm spinner Parunika Sisodia dismissed her. Aayushi Shukla added to the wickets’ column after dismissing Shashini Gimhani.
In the end, India restricted Sri Lanka out for 58 for nine in 20 overs. Parunika had a decent day in the office with economical figures of 4-0-7-2. Vaishnavi Sharma, who took a hat-trick and a five-wicket against Malaysia, finished with figures of 4-1-3-1.
