The VMAX Cinema at Prestigious Events Cinema in Castle Hill came alive on Saturday night with a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Clarence Wijewardena, widely celebrated as the father of Sinhala pop music, in honour of what would have been his 82nd birthday.
The highlight of the evening was the screening of the much-acclaimed film based on the legend “Clarence – Rhythm of the Guitar”, a cinematic portrayal of Clarence’s extraordinary musical journey.
The film’s producer and Chairman of Kandy City Centre, Tusitha Wijayasena, graced the event alongside Amila Wijewardena, daughter of the music legend, and Tharindu Wijayasena, COO of Kandy City Centre, who represented the production company.
Presented by Lanka Events, a division of Yasiru Multimedia Pty Ltd, and led by renowned cultural promoter Kithsiri Karunaratne, the event was a resounding success, drawing a packed audience of fans, artists, and community leaders. The tribute highlighted the timeless appeal of Clarence’s music and his enduring influence on generations of Sri Lankans around the world.
Adding a deeply emotional layer to the night were live performances by rising local talents. Vocalists Nivod Menusha and Thisal Padukkavidana performed some of Clarence’s classic hits, followed by an elegant dance performance by Sasani Jayasinghe, accompanied by a soulful violin rendition of Clarence’s melodies by Sathmi Ranasinghe. The crowd, swept up in nostalgia, sang along to the beloved tunes that once defined a musical era.
A moving moment came when Amila Wijewardena entered the auditorium as her father’s cherished song “Duwani” played in the background. She was warmly welcomed by producer Tusitha Wijeyasena. Amila shared her gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate her father’s legacy in such a meaningful way, while acknowledging the absence of her mother, Sheela Wijewardena, who could not attend due to health reasons. Sheela, however, sent her blessings and made a heartfelt request that her favourite song, “Sudu Menike Mage Manike”, be played during the evening — a song Clarence had composed especially for her.
The event was hosted by prominent Sri Lankan TV presenter Dilka Samanmalee, who guided the proceedings with warmth and professionalism with Sasindra Jinadasa. In his address, Tusitha Wijayasena expressed his deep appreciation for the overwhelming support from the Sri Lankan-Australian community, whose enthusiasm and love helped bring the tribute to life.
A number of distinguished figures from the Sri Lankan arts community were in attendance, including legendary actress Jeewarani Kurukulasooriya, Shirani Kurukulasooriya, and film producers and Drama directors, Dr. Mahesh Bandara, Champa Buddhipala, and Sisil Gunasekara.
