Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed that ‘The Batman Part II’, directed by Matt Reeves, will go on floors in spring 2026, with a global release now scheduled for October 2027.
The announcement comes on the heels of Reeves completing the much-anticipated script, a critical milestone for the studio before greenlighting production.
The sequel to ‘The Batman’ (2022), which starred Robert Pattinson and grossed an impressive $772 million worldwide, has faced multiple delays. Initially slated for October 2026, the release was pushed back by a year as the studio prioritised a finished screenplay over rushing into pre-production.
According to Variety, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, addressed the timeline shift, pointing out that long gaps between franchise instalments are nothing new. “To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” he noted, citing examples like the 7-year gap between Alien and Aliens, 14 years between The Incredibles films, and the 13-year wait for Avatar: The Way of Water. Gunn emphasised the studio’s policy of not beginning production until a completed script is in place, especially for major IPs.
Taking to social media, Gunn also defended Matt Reeves against growing impatience online. “People should get off Matt’s nuts (sic),” he wrote candidly, adding, “Let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. He doesn’t owe you something because you liked his movie.”
Beyond the film itself, Warner Bros. reaffirmed its long-term vision for DC Studios as a central pillar of its entertainment portfolio. “The DC Universe represents not just one of Warner Bros. Discovery’s most prized intellectual properties - it’s one of the most valuable in all entertainment,” the studio stated.
As part of its expansive ten-year plan, the studio is developing a slate of interconnected projects across film and television, including ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Clayface’, and the next chapter of ‘Wonder Woman’.
