Angelo Mathews has officially played his final innings in Test cricket after being dismissed for the last time in the ongoing Test match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at Galle International Stadium on June 21. 

The emotional moment came on Day 5 of the match, as Mathews walked off the field for the final time. 

Angelo Mathews was dismissed after scoring just 8 runs off 45 balls. Facing a delivery from Bangladesh’s off-spinner Nayeem Hasan, Mathews played a forward defensive shot to a good length ball that pitched on middle stump. 

Unfortunately for the Sri Lankan legend, the ball took an inside edge off his bat, striking his front pad before being caught at silly point by Mominul Haque.

Angelo Mathews Test Career

Angelo Mathews retires from the longest format of the game as he made 8,214 runs from 119 Tests at an average of 44.4, with 16 centuries and 49 half-centuries to his name. 

In 2013, Angelo Mathews was handed the leadership of the Test side for the first time in his career. It marked a big occasion as Angelo became the youngest Sri Lanka player to become Test captain. 

Playing his last match against Bangladesh, he went on to score 39 and 8, in his last two innings, that took his overall tally to 8214 runs in 119 Tests, at an average of 44.4.

That also means, Angelo Mathews ended his Test career as the third-highest run-getter for Sri Lanka, after the likes of Kumar Sangakkara (12,400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814). The next on the list is Dimuth Karunaratne, who ended with 7,222 runs. 

After having received a guard of honour in the first innings, the Bangladeshi players made sure, to shake hands as the veteran made the long way back to the pavilion, for the one last time. 

If one talks about some of the records that Mathews went on to create — he had the fourth highest runs at a single venue.

Playing in Galle, in 34 matches, he scored 2,253 runs at an average of 44 including two tons, and three fifties. The top three spots are held by his countrymen Jayawardene and Sangakkara. 

Overall, he had an excellent record at home. Playing in Lanka, he piled on 4,336 runs — top the list of players with most runs at home, surpassing even Virat Kohli. During his 16-year old career, he went on to smash 90 sixes, the most by any Sri Lankan in the format.
