Apple may expand eSIM-only iPhones in more countries this year

Apple appears poised to expand its transition away from physical SIM card trays in its iPhones, with indications that more European countries will shift to eSIM technology this year.

A source has revealed to MacRumors that retail employees at Apple Authorized Resellers in the European Union are required to undergo training focused on iPhones equipped with eSIM functionality, which must be completed by Friday, September 5.

This move suggests that Apple is gearing up for a significant rollout of eSIM-enabled devices across its European markets, which include prominent nations such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Anticipation is building around the upcoming announcement of the iPhone 17 series, scheduled for Tuesday, September 9, just a few days after the training deadline. This timing raises questions about whether the new iPhone models will debut without the traditional SIM card slot.

The training materials are hosted on Apple’s SEED app, accessible to employees from both Apple Stores and Authorized Resellers globally. This hints that the eSIM-related training may extend beyond the EU, potentially setting the stage for a worldwide transition.

In the United States, the iPhone 14 series and subsequent models have already adopted a fully eSIM approach, eliminating the SIM card slot entirely. Although Apple has yet to remove the physical SIM tray from devices in other countries, the expectation is that the iPhone 17 series will initiate this change.

A report from The Information had previously highlighted that Apple plans to phase out physical SIMs in more regions, although specific models within the iPhone 17 lineup and the exact countries were not disclosed.

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that the iPhone 17 Air will most likely be eSIM-only, indicating that other variants such as the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max might follow suit, with potential exceptions for certain markets, including China.

The shift to eSIM technology has been marketed by Apple since the launch of the iPhone 14 series in 2022, emphasizing the added security features it offers. Unlike physical SIM cards, eSIMs cannot be removed from devices that are lost or stolen. Additionally, users can manage multiple eSIMs simultaneously, allowing for more convenient travel without the need for multiple physical SIM cards.

Apple has also provided support documentation detailing global carriers that offer eSIM services, underscoring its commitment to facilitating this transition for consumers. As the launch of the iPhone 17 series approaches, all eyes will be on how these changes are implemented worldwide and the implications for mobile connectivity in the years to come.
