Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling effort bundled Sri Lanka out for 244 in 49.2 overs at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday, setting up a competitive chase in the opening ODI of the three-match series.

Sri Lanka’s captain Charith Asalanka fought hard with a composed 106 off 123 balls, including six fours and four sixes, to lift his side after an early collapse.

However, Bangladesh’s pace duo Taskin Ahmed and Tanzim Hasan Sakib struck early, reducing Sri Lanka to 29 for three inside the first powerplay.

Kusal Mendis (45) and Asalanka tried to steady the innings with a partnership, but debutant Tanvir Islam broke the stand by dismissing Mendis.

Taskin finished as the leading wicket-taker with 4 for 42, including crucial late wickets of Wanindu Hasaranga (22) and Maheesh Theekshana in the death overs.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib also impressed with figures of 3 for 46 in 9.2 overs, dismissing Asalanka in the final overs as Sri Lanka sought to accelerate.

Despite humid conditions and an injury scare to Mustafizur Rahman, who had to leave the field mid-over, Bangladesh’s bowling unit remained composed and effective. Tanvir Islam bowled through cramps to complete his full quota, taking 1 for 44.

With Sri Lanka all out just four balls before the 50-over mark, Bangladesh now have a target of 244 to take a 1-0 lead under the full-time ODI captaincy of Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
