Kusal Mendis struck a classy century to anchor Sri Lanka to 285 for seven in 50 overs, setting Bangladesh a target of 286 to win the series decider in Pallekele on Tuesday.
Coming in after an early breakthrough from Tanzim Hasan, Mendis rebuilt with composure, reaching his 35th ODI fifty with ease before accelerating to his sixth career hundred.
The wicketkeeper-batter reached three figures with a single after smashing a boundary off Mehidy Hasan Miraz, taking just 95 balls and hitting 16 fours in the process. It was his second ODI century against Bangladesh.
Mendis found a solid partner in skipper Charith Asalanka, who contributed 58 off 68 balls as the pair added a crucial 124-run stand for the fourth wicket, laying the foundation for a competitive total.
The partnership was broken when Taskin Ahmed dismissed Asalanka, triggering a mini-collapse in the final overs.
Bangladesh fought back late, with Shamim Hossain removing Mendis for 124, and Taskin claiming his second wicket by dismissing Dunith Wellalage. However, Sri Lanka managed to push past the 280 mark, with Wanindu Hasaranga (18 off 14) adding important late runs.
Taskin ended with two wickets while Tanzim, Tanvir Islam and Miraz picked up one each. Mustafizur Rahman bowled economically early but went wicketless.
Bangladesh will now need to chase 286 under lights to secure their first ODI series win in Sri Lanka, with the pitch expected to remain good for batting but scoreboard pressure and dew likely to play a role in the decider.
