Superstar Rajinikanth is set to headline a new film, ‘Thalaivar 173’, which will be directed by Sundar C and produced by Kamal Haasan.
The official announcement was made on Wednesday, accompanied by a photo of Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release during Pongal 2027.
A statement from the makers read, “Superstar Rajinikanth is set to headline in the magnum opus ‘Thalaivar 173’, under Kamal Haasan’s RaajKamal Films International banner directed by Sundar C.”
The collaboration not only brings together two celebrated artists but also underscores the longstanding professional relationship between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. It added, “This landmark collaboration not only unites two towering forces of Indian cinema but also celebrates five decades of friendship and brotherhood between Superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan- a bond that continues to inspire generations of artists and audiences alike.”
The announcement follows a successful year for Rajinikanth, who recently starred in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s ensemble project ‘Coolie’. The film featured a notable cast, including Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram, Upendra, and Aamir Khan, and achieved box office earnings exceeding Rs 500 crore worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of 2025.
The superstar is currently filming the sequel to his 2023 blockbuster, ‘Jailer’. Titled ‘Jailer 2’ and directed by Nelson, the film will see Rajinikanth reprise his role as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Shiva Rajkumar and Mohanlal are expected to make cameo appearances.
Reports indicate that Telugu superstar Nandamuri Balakrishna may join the cast of ‘Jailer 2’, and veteran Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty is confirmed to appear.
With ‘Thalaivar 173’ scheduled for Pongal 2027, anticipation is growing for further updates about the film’s cast, crew, and production details.
