Test captain Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI skipper, replacing Rohit Sharma, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday.
The 25-year-old will begin his stint with the three-match series against Australia, starting on October 19.
Despite the change in leadership, senior batters Rohit Sharma, 38, and Virat Kohli, 36, have both been included in the squad for the tour.
The change marks a major step for Gill, who took over as Test captain earlier this year and now assumes charge of the ODI side while also serving as T20I vice-captain.
His elevation comes shortly after he guided India to a resounding win over West Indies in his first Test as captain on home soil. Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been named ODI vice-captain.
Key absentees and new faces
All-rounder Hardik Pandya and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant miss out as they continue to recover from injuries — a quad strain and a fractured right foot respectively. Their absence has opened the door for Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel, both named in the ODI squad.
Yashasvi Jaiswal also finds a place, while veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been omitted. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from the ODIs but will return for the T20I leg.
The ODI bowling unit will feature Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna.
Bumrah headlines India’s T20I squad, which otherwise mirrors the group that lifted the Asia Cup in the UAE. Washington Sundar, a standby for that tournament, has now been promoted to the main squad.

Schedule
India’s white-ball tour begins with a three-match ODI series against Australia — starting at Perth Stadium on October 19, followed by fixtures at Adelaide Oval on October 23 and the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25.
The sides will then meet in a five-match T20I series from October 29 to November 8, with games scheduled in Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Gold Coast and Brisbane.
