2025 Asia Rugby Sevens Series: Sri Lanka thrash China to qualify for semi-final

Sri Lanka defeated China 34-07 in a Pool C encounter on Day Two of the final leg of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series 2025 at the Racecourse International Stadium in Colombo.
 
The Sri Lanka-China encounter which was scheduled for last evening got underway this morning after proceedings were halted early yesterday owing to heavy downpour and lightning in Colombo.
 
Experienced Srinath Sooriyabandara got the proceedings underway with a brilliant try to give Sri Lanka the lead against China in the second minute of the encounter.
 
However, China’s persistent pressure yielded a try for the visitors in the sixth minute which was also converted.
 
Janidu Dilshan then scored a try for the Tuskers at the stroke of half-time to regain the lead.
 
Sri Lanka led 12-07 at the break.
 
At the start of the second half, China externed continuous pressure on the Lankans but failed to add to their tally.
 
Gayan Perera scored a try in the third minute of the second half to extend the lead to 10 points.
 
Sri Lanka was then awarded a penalty try which effectively put the game beyond China’s reach in the fifth minute of the second half.
 
Despite the commanding lead, Sri Lankans continued their onslaught and went on to score two more tries through Dilan Ekanayake to register a comprehensive win.
 
With the win, Sri Lanka qualified for the Cup semi-final of the tournament.
 
Sri Lanka will take on Japan in the semi-final at 2:02 p.m.
 
 
Sri Lanka defeated Uzbekistan 26-14 and Singapore 22-05 in the other two Pool C games.
 
Meanwhile, in the women’s segment, Sri Lanka who lost all three pool games will take on Malaysia in the Ninth-Place play-off semi-final this morning.
 
The final leg of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series 2025 underway at the Racecourse International Stadium in Colombo last morning with the participation of 24 men’s and women’s teams.
 
Curtains on the Colombo leg of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series 2025 will come down with the Men’s final encounter which is scheduled to be held at 6:26 p.m. today.
