ICC urges Pakistan to reconsider World Cup boycott; warns of ‘long-term implications’

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has voiced concern over the Pakistan government’s directive for its national team to “selectively participate” in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The development comes after the government of Pakistan allowed the national cricket team to participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, while barring it from playing its scheduled match against India on February 15.

While the council is still awaiting official communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in this regard, it warned that such a stance is difficult to reconcile with the fundamental premise of a global tournament, where all qualified nations are expected to compete on equal terms.

Emphasising that ICC events are built on the pillars of sporting integrity and fairness, the governing body stated that selective participation directly undermines the spirit and sanctity of international competition.

While acknowledging the role of governments in national policy, the ICC stressed that this boycott is not in the interest of the global game or the millions of fans worldwide, including those in Pakistan.

The council further cautioned the PCB to consider the “significant and long-term implications” of this decision, noting that it could damage the very global cricket ecosystem from which Pakistan benefits as a member.

The ICC concluded by urging the PCB to find a resolution that protects the interests of all stakeholders, reiterating that the successful delivery of the World Cup remains a collective responsibility of all member nations.

ICC said, “It expects the PCB to explore a mutually acceptable resolution, which protects the interests of all stakeholders.”
