Sri Lanka rated most affordable destination for foreign retirees in 2026

Sri Lanka has been rated the most affordable destination for foreign nationals to retire in 2026, according to the International Living 2026 Annual Global Retirement Index.

 

The 35th Annual Global Retirement Index for 2026 by International Living, evaluates countries based on factors like cost of living, healthcare, climate, and residency options.

 

Greece secured the top spot in the 2026 Annual Global Retirement Index by International Living, establishing it as the world’s best place to retire.

 

Greece’s ascent to number one highlights its compelling combination of unparalleled lifestyle, affordability, and ease of transition for foreign retirees, surpassing traditional favorites.

 

While, the Index, positioned Greece at the pinnacle of global retirement havens, Sri Lanka has been rated as the most affordable destination.

 

Sri Lanka with 98 rating points in the dedicated affordable section has been ranked top destination for foreign nationals retiring in 2026. Vietnam with 97 rating points is placed second while Thailand with 96 rating points is placed third. Bali, Indonesia and Malaysia complete the top five nations that are most affordable for foreign retirees in 2026.

 

Sri Lanka has been recognized for affordable food including groceries, cost-effective transportation and cheap healthcare in Colombo. Sri Lanka is also recognized as a nation with one of the easiest and cheapest retirement visa requirements in Asia.

 

“With 13 UNESCO heritage sites, pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and low prices, Sri Lanka is a place where you can live richly without spending a fortune,” International Living said in its latest update.

 

The Annual Global Retirement Index by International Living is a guide that ranks the best places in the world to retire overseas, based on the real-life experiences and insights of expats living in those destinations. 

 

International Living is a magazine drawing on more than 40 years of expertise, helps retirees identify countries that align with their lifestyle dreams and budget while saving them time, cost, and uncertainty.
