CR & FC crowned Inter-Club Rugby League Champions

CR & FC defeated defending champions Kandy Sports Club 23-21 in a pulsating Cup final to be crowned 2025/26 Inter-Club Rugby League Champions at Longdon Place this evening (21).

The League Championship was decided in the final minute of the league season when Murshid Dooray put over a penalty much to the jubilation of the CR supporters.

Although Kandy lost Dinal Ekanayake for a red card in the 13th minute of the game, Kandy looked all set to secure the title for another season when Diluksha Dange planted a try in the dying seconds of the final.

Kandy led 21-20 on the resumption but a penalty in favour of CR for a high tackle handed the game and the trophy for the home side.

CR scored one goal, two tries and two penalties while Kandy SC scored three goals missing out on the title by a slender two points.

Kandy led 14-07 at lemons despite playing the majority half with 14 men.

CR entered the game as favourites after defeating the Kandy side last week at the same venue and managed to keep the defending champions at bay for a second successive game.

Although Kandy SC came into the game as underdogs, they put on a spirit show but could not outfox the home side and retain the title for another season.

CR also led the points table at the conclusion of the super round fixtures.

Yesterday, Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club defeated Sri Lanka Police 24-12 to win the Plate Championship.

Champions CR and Kandy will now head to play in the Inter-Club knock-out tournament for the second silverware of the season.
