Pakistan need massive win against Sri Lanka to qualify for T20 World Cup semis

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup semi-final hopes are hanging by a thread as they need a massive victory over Sri Lanka in their final Super 8 match today.

After a washout against New Zealand and a heavy 61-run defeat to India in the group stages, followed by a close loss to England in the Super 8s, Pakistan sits third in Group 2.

Following England’s victory over New Zealand on February 27, Pakistan’s fate depends on overcoming New Zealand’s superior Net Run Rate (NRR).

Pakistan T20 World Cup semi-final scenario

If Pakistan bats first, they must defeat Sri Lanka by at least 64 runs.

If Sri Lanka bats first, Pakistan must chase the target within 13.1 overs.

The bottom line is that a simple win is insufficient; failure to meet these margins will see New Zealand progress to the semi-finals alongside England.

Pakistan’s campaign has been hampered by inconsistent batting, with captain Salman Ali Agha and Babar Azam facing criticism for low strike rates.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka

Date & Time: Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 7:00 PM local (13:30 GMT).

Venue: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy.

Prediction: Analysts give Pakistan a 58% winning probability, noting their strong historical head-to-head record against Sri Lanka (17 wins in 30 meetings).
