In a major revelation for fans of the wizarding world, HBO has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Harry Potter TV series, which is set to premiere on Christmas 2026.
The series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will adapt J.K. Rowling’s beloved first book and marks the beginning of an extensive journey that is expected to explore the original material in more detail than the previous film adaptations.
The two-minute teaser showcases the central trio: Harry, played by Dominic McLaughlin, along with Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, portrayed by Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout, respectively.
The trailer highlights their fateful meeting on the Hogwarts Express as they embark on their magical education at the illustrious school.
Several iconic scenes from both the book and the 2001 film are featured, including Harry’s introduction to Hagrid, the Sorting Hat ceremony, and the excitement of his inaugural Quidditch match as Gryffindor’s seeker.
McLaughlin, Stanton, and Stout were selected from a robust casting process that sought British children between the ages of nine and eleven. They will play their roles in a relatively real-time fashion over multiple seasons.
The series also features a stellar cast of adult characters, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape.
Notably, Essiedu has faced significant backlash for his casting, receiving threats regarding his portrayal of Snape—a character previously depicted by Alan Rickman. He has courageously remarked that he intends to channel this negativity into a powerful performance.
Francesca Gardiner, a writer known for her work on Succession, serves as the showrunner, while Mark Mylod, of Game of Thrones fame, directs several episodes. The production has remained under tight wraps at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire since last July.
JB Perrette, the CEO and president of global streaming and games at Warner Bros Discovery, described the series as “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period.” He stressed the significance of this adaptation in the realm of modern entertainment, asserting its unparalleled status.
The announcement also rekindled interest in the perspectives of past franchise stars. Daniel Radcliffe, who portrayed Harry in the original films, recently commented on the newcomers, expressing confidence that McLaughlin will excel in the role, citing his own learning curve during the earlier series.
However, the upcoming series has not been without controversy. It has sparked intense discussions within the fan community, particularly regarding J.K. Rowling’s past comments on transgender issues. While Rowling serves as an executive producer, the casting of Essiedu as Snape has added fuel to an already contentious debate.
Lithgow acknowledged the criticism surrounding Rowling, emphasizing that the essence of her work promotes tolerance and love.
In defense of the project, HBO’s chief content officer Casey Bloys stated that while Rowling’s views are personal, they do not overshadow the narrative itself. He reiterated that “Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything.”
As the series prepares for its Christmas launch, it marks nearly three decades since the initial publication of the first book, further solidifying its enduring legacy in popular culture.
