Aamir Khan confirms 3 Idiots 2 with 10-year leap, returns as Phunsukh Wangdu

Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that a sequel to 3 Idiots is in the works, ending years of speculation around one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic films.

In a recent interview, Aamir revealed that director Rajkumar Hirani is currently developing the sequel alongside writer Abhijat Joshi. While the script is still being refined, the actor said the core story has already taken shape and promises a fresh yet familiar narrative.

The upcoming film will feature a 10-year time jump, revisiting the beloved characters—Rancho, Farhan, and Raju—at a new stage in their lives. Aamir confirmed that he will reprise his role as Phunsukh Wangdu, also known as Rancho.

“It’s the story of the same characters you saw in 3 Idiots but set 10 years later. The concept is unusual and retains the humour of the original,” Aamir said.

The sequel aims to explore how the trio’s lives have evolved over the past decade while preserving the emotional depth and social commentary that made the first film a cult classic.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots also starred R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Boman Irani. The film’s take on India’s education system, combined with humour and strong performances, made it a massive commercial and critical success.

Aamir also shared an update on another project with Hirani—a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke—which has been put on hold due to ongoing script revisions.

With 3 Idiots 2 now in development, fans can expect a nostalgic yet contemporary continuation of a story that continues to resonate across generations.
