Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage stated in Parliament today (May 25) that a special ICC team that had wanted to question Hashan Tilakaratne over his match fixing claims was unable to reach the former Test Captain.
A special debate on sport in Sri Lanka is currently being held at parliament where several questions regarding the former Captain’s allegations were raised.
Answering a question raised by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake regarding the action taken by the government over these allegations, Minister Aluthgamage stated that Tilakaratne had not revealed any information to the police regarding the match fixing allegations he had made.
He stated that Tilakaratne and his wife had not been contactable to which Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasignhe stated that authorities may get their answers if they attend a Pirith chanting ceremony which will be held next week at the former Captain’s residence.
Hashan Tilakaratne alleged that match-fixing had been common in Sri Lanka’s cricket and promised that he would come out with the names of the responsible persons in the near future.
However, he also said the ICC World Cup final was not fixed.
