The government has imported cement from a company just one week after it suspended the same company from supplying cement, due to issue regarding the standard of the cement, JVP Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath claims.
He accused the government of distributing the consignment of “inferior” cement without even waiting for the tests by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution to be completed.
Addressing media during a press briefing held today (August 14) he stated that a government gazette had listed cement as an essential item and therefore the cement which are sold within the country require certificate of standards. “Inferior cement had been imported under such circumstances.” he said.
According to Mr. Herath the Pakistani company which the cement was imported from supplies cement to over 28 countries.
“However, there are differences in the quality. The cement exported to Europe is not the same cement exported to South Africa.”
He claimed that a case had been filed against the company in a court in the capital of South Africa and that the Pakistani company was found guilty and subsequently was “blacklisted”.
