UNP MPs attacked to prevent objection to budget: Senasinghe

UNP Parliamentarians were attacked by MPs of the ruling government party in a bid to prevent them from objecting to the budget proposal, which “does not provide sufficient relief for the masses,” according to Sujeewa Senasinghe.

Several back row MPs of Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, the United National Party, had reportedly been attacked by government MPs during the budget reading.

The scuffle had occurred after UNP MPs had held up placards reading “This is a bucket, not a budget” and “Shame” while President Rajapaksa delivered his 2012 budget speech.

We condemn this attack on opposition parliamentarian by government parliamentarian, right in front of the President, UNP MP Senasinghe told Ada Derana after staging a walkout at parliament.

Expressing strong objection to the budget speech all MPs of the United National Party walked out today (21) claiming that the government had failed to provide any relief to the public through the budget.

At a time when there is no law in the country, the situation within the parliament is “regrettable,” he further stated.
