Investigation into brawl in Parliament: Speaker
Mobitel Inner

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe today raised the issue of the ruckus in Parliament, during which several opposition MPs were assaulted yesterday, stating that it brought to question the security of MPs within the Parliament.

He added that the Speaker of Parliament should be responsible for the security of the Members of parliament.

In response to this Speaker Chamal Rajapakse said that an investigation will be carried out regarding the incident and added that “not only that” those responsible for bringing placards and posters to parliament and creating a tense situation will also be investigated.

MPs of the United National Party (UNP) had reportedly held placards reading “This is a bucket, not a budget” and “Shame” in Parliament yesterday during the President’s budget speech.

This resulted in fisticuffs between back row MPS of the opposition and the government party after which the UNP Parliamentarians staged a walkout.

UNP MP Sujeewa Senasinghe speaking to Ada Derana yesterday condemned the attack which he says occurred right in front of the President and stating that the situation within the parliament is “regrettable”.
