
The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) arrested on bribery charges was remanded by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (10).
ASP in charge of Nugegoda Division, Nihal Mendis was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption yesterday following a complaint filed by a woman from Maharagama.
Submitting a report to court the Bribery Commission stated that the woman, who operates a welfare center providing facilities to patients visiting the Maharagama Cancer Hospital, had filed a complaint with the ASP in question seeking to resolve a dispute regarding the ownership of the property.
The police officer had requested a bribe of Rs. 1 million in order to resolve the issue in a manner favorable to the complainant.
He was subsequently arrested by Bribery Commission officials while accepting the bribe at a Temple in Wijerama yesterday.
The Assistant Superintendent of Police was ordered remanded until March 22 by the Colombo Magistrate following a request by the Bribery Commission, which stated that investigations pertaining to the case have not been completed yet.
