The United National Party says that the present situation in the country is such that the sons of politicians can go anywhere, do anything they want and get away with anything.

They can point firearms at anyone and assault them and still walk free, UNP parliamentarian Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said while adding that the persons who are assault by them later file affidavits claiming nobody assaulted them.

When government officials are tied to trees they later declare they tied themselves to trees, the Kurunegala District MP declared, “It’s that kind of era.”

He stated that the independent police commission, independent elections commission and independent education services commission were taken under the president through the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and therefore there is no one to take up these issues or listen to them.

Even demonstrations, protests cannot be held because those who participated are arrested, he charged.

Kariyawasam stated that this is a situation where the government pats on the head and suppresses. Even the media is patted on the head so the government can get its work done, he said.

This will result in a dangerous period in the near future, he warned adding that the government is suppressing in a larger scale than visible.

Even the country’s academics and their families are being assaulted, intimidated and threatened, he claimed. “That is the manner in which this government is attempting to rule the country.”
