PSC’s verdict is clear as “set in stone” - Hemakumara

Former Minister and Mawbima Janatha Party leader, Hemakumara Nanayakkara says the public has inquired from him whether a person who once helped a terrorist organization manufacture bombs, is currently serving as a member of the PSC probing the impeachment charges against the Chief Justice.

He claimed that people have also asked him whether an individual who using swords and knives had carried out murders in the past, plotted to kill the principal of his own and school and then carried it out is representing the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC).

People inquire whether a person who has not even passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination, let alone law, is sitting in the 11-member PSC, he said.

The former Minister and Presidential Advisor on agricultural affairs further pointed out that individuals who have been charged in court are also representing this committee, investigating 14 charges leveled against the country’s top judge Shrani Bandaranayake.

Therefore the verdict delivered by this Parliamentary Select Committee regarding the Chief Justice will not be an independent and impartial one, he said addressing a press briefing held by the Joint Opposition.

Nanayakkara stated that suspicion has risen that a PSC with such members in it would turn into a “jungle court” and that he feels the committee would proceed to reach a verdict based on hatred and anger.

Be selecting a majority of the members from the ruling party, the verdict of the PSC is clear as “set in stone,” he said.
