
Lawyers’ Collective today rejected the removal of Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, terming the decree as “unconstitutional” and “illegal” and also opposed the appointing of a new Chief Justice.
The association stated that public can file a Fundamental Rights petition or request for a writ order challenging the appointing of a new Chief Justice.
Speaking at a press conference today (14) members of the of the Lawyers’ Collective: President’s Counsel Srinath Perera, J. C. Weliamuna, Lal Wijenayake and Chandrapala Kumara explained that the decision whether to vacate the post rests with Shirani Bandaranayake, however said they would continue with their struggle.
On Sunday, President Mahinda Rajapaksa formally dismissed Bandaranayake from office after Parliament impeached her.
