
The United National Party (UNP) and the JVP voted against the bill.
The Code of Criminal Procedure (Special Provisions) Bill was presented to the parliament on October 11, 2012 by the Justice Minister. The law enables police to detain a suspect without a warrant for a period of 48 hours before producing the suspect in court.
Earlier however the law only permitted the police to hold a suspect without a warrant for 24 hours.
