Contaminated diesel imported by LIOC rejected

Approximately 5,000 metric tonnes of allegedly substandard diesel imported by Lanka IOC has been rejected by Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited (CPSTL) pending further tests, an official said.

Laboratory tests conducted on diesel samples obtained from the shipment of fuel had confirmed that they were inferior, CPSTL spokesman Nisshanka Jayawardena said. Therefore it has been rejected by the CPSTL.

Lankan IOC managing director Subodh Dakwale, when inquired by Ada Derana, stated that the fuel stock was imported from a Singapore-based company and that it will be returned.

Lanka IOC, a subsidiary of Indian Oil Corporation, further assured that they will not distribute fuel identified as substandard.

It was reported yesterday that Lanka IOC had had imported a consignment of 40,000 metric tonnes of fuel and that it contained contaminated fuel.

Tests conducted by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) had confirmed that 5,000 metric tonnes of diesel contained in the ship, which will also take fuel to a port in China, was contaminated.

Substandard fuel imported by the state-owned petroleum corporation had created havoc after a large number of vehicles were damaged after using the fuel, resulting in the CPC paying large compensations to motorists.
