Over 500 activists of various pro-Tamil outfits, including MDMK leader Vaiko and Tamil Nationalist Movement leader Pazha Nedumaran, were detained on Tuesday after they protested in front of the Unicef office here in support of their demand for democratic rights to ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.
“United Nations must conduct a referendum to enable ethnic Tamils to get their democratic rights in Sri Lanka,” MDMK leader Vaiko told reporters here. He also sought an international investigation into war crimes in Lanka.
Joined by Tamil Nationalist Movement leader Pazha Nedumaran, the MDMK leader said that they did not believe in the resolutions brought against Sri Lanka by the United States in the UN Human Rights Council. “We will continue to struggle until establishment of Tamil Eelam in the island nation,” he said.
A minor scuffle between the police and the demonstrators led by May 17 Movement Thirumurugan Gandhi when he tried to enter the Unicef office breaking the barricade. They also burned the effigies of Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapakse and UN secretary general Ban Ki Moon. (DeccanChronicle)
